The Work Health and Safety Experts (‘WHSE’) were recently engaged by a Western Australian-based operation to provide work health and safety consulting in relation to an enforceable undertaking. The enforceable undertaking was entered into under Division 3 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1984 (WA). An enforceable undertaking legally binds an organisation to implementing a range of corrective actions as an alternative to a payment of fines under the Act.

As a part of the arrangement, the organisation:

  • Implemented a hazard management system that included the introduction of Job Hazard Assessments (‘JHA’s’) and a ‘major risks’ program;
  • Implemented a quality auditing system;
  • Instilled key performance indicator documentation and reporting;
  • Performed a full audit capability, qualification and insurance on all contractors and sub-contractors;
  • Performed pre-qualification audits for certification to ISO 45001 ‘Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems’;
  • Provided updating inductions and HSE-specific training to its employees;
  • Reviewed and raised additional corrective actions from previous incident investigations within the last five years;
  • Reviewed and updated the integral WHS/HSE documentation of the operation (risk register, safe work methods, auditing templates and incident reporting processes); and
  • Updated internal fatigue management requirements;
